Uterine fibroids are the most frequent non cancerous tumors of the uterus and approximately 20-25 million Indian women are at risk at their childbearing age. Presently for this problem, the treatment options available are Hysterectomy (surgical removal of uterus) and Myomectomy (open surgical / laparoscopic removal of visible fibroids). These are major surgeries and they give extra burden to the patient emotionally, financially and physically.

Fibroids are emerging as a major health problem in the country. Depending on location, size and number of fibroids, they may cause heavy, prolonged menstrual periods & unusual bleeding, sometime with clots. This might lead to anemia. Lower abdominal, back or leg pain, lower abdominal pressure or heaviness, bladder pressure leading to a constant urge to urinate, pressure on bowel leading to constipation and bloating, and abnormally enlarged abdomen are other symptoms.

The “Uterine Artery Embolization” to treat fibroids without surgery is a new kind of treatment. This new approach has many advantages like it is performed under local anesthesia, requires only a tiny nick in the skin (No surgical incision of abdomen), recovery is shorter than from hysterectomy or open myomectomy, all fibroids are treated at one sitting, no recurrent growth of treated fibroids, Uterine fibroid embolization involves virtually no blood loss or risk of blood transfusion, Emotionally, financially and physically – embolization can have an overall advantage over other procedures for the patient as the uterus is not removed.

In addition, this procedure is very helpful for high risk patients who are un-fit for surgery due to various reasons like high blood pressure, obesity, anemia, chronic renal failure and diabetes mellitus.
